Built for a retiring member of the Air Force, this box stands over four feet tall and is one of the largest I’ve successfully shipped in one piece. The case is made from Cherry, with the stripes built from Walnut and stained darker for added contrast.

The stripes were routed with a small cove, while the star got a chamfer with the corners chiseled out. The case received a similar treatment with a classical profile and the top of each hit with the chisel as well. Multiple jointing styles were used, with the front assembled with Festool Dominoes and the back with custom dovetails and screwed/capped shelf for the flag. This was one of my first attempts to make a separate compartment for the flag and with this success it might be my go-to option from now on.

I love this! What a great design. It is very large, the largest I have seen. They must have a lot of memorabilia to display. I would love to see it decked out. The walnut/cherry combination is a great balance of contrast and warmth. What a personal and meaningful gift. What is the inside of the main compartment like. Is there a special material used to display the medals and pins? Is it some sort of felt board with a soft backing?

Well done! i love this project.

Thanks for the reminder of the filled box. Added!
The back is suede fabric over 2 layers of foam board and 1/4” plywood underlayment on the back.
