I saw rwyoungs version of this puzzle a few months ago and favorited it.

I am suffering “writer’s block” over one of my larger projects I am doing. I wanted to take my mind off of it with a smaller project and decided this was the one.

I did a mock up in cardboard to get all the dimensions perfect and then started on the box, which is primarily poplar with a walnut lid. Joinery consists of a variable box joint that runs around the box instead of matching on contrasting sides – I don’t know if I like it or not yet…........

The lid was cut from a single thick piece of walnut – I sliced off the “steps” on the bottom with my table saw.

The pieces to the puzzle are also solid poplar and gang-cut on my scroll saw.

Everything was then soaked in lemon oil and allowed to dry overnight.

The idea of the puzzle is to be able to fit the four pieces into a much smaller box and then get the lid to fit as well. Pic two shows the solution – pretty cool puzzle!

Thanks again to rwyoung!

Cool. I like the funnel shape. Got to remember that shape.

The large vs. small box joints are…. different.
