Keepsake Tile Table

Down the road from our house in Bali was a ceramic factory (Jengala – it’s still there). Every Mother’s Day I would take the children to make a custom tile which their Mother used to decorate the kitchen wall. When we moved to Colorado the tiles were taken with us, and they have lived in a plastic box in the garage ever since.

It seemed inappropriate to store such treasures next to the jumper cables and spare tyres, so I finally got around to working on a design.

Actually, that’s not how it worked. When I started the only thing I knew was I wanted individual trays for each tile. The table arrangement came much, much later: after the trays were made.

I’m not sure where I got the idea of stacking them as drawers – probably Pinterest.

The laminated tabletop simply made sense as a way to deal with wood movement.

The trays and the table frame are cedar. the tabletop is mahogany and my dwindling supply of marbau.

The brass pulls, are from the very nice people at Woodworkers Supply.

Very nice, Doug! It’s good to have a proper home for such treasures.

Merry Christmas!

That’s a wonderful idea, what a finer way to show them your gratitude.

Thanks. all.

Dave, Mads: good to hear from you.

Swirt, just took a look at your stuff. Very different from me, but really interesting and imaginative work!
