various boxs

More practice with 45* corners and differnt lids. The first ones are braclet boxs of Maple and Walnut. This was some of the first corner decoration I did. I like the fact that it makes the corner stronger.

The third pic is my first hinged box. I use the flipping story stick for the hinges to lay them out on the router table and it worked great. The box is purple heart and birds eye maple. It was built to fit a witmans sampler per the wifes request.

Fourth pic is a paded slide top box I made quite a while back for some blown glass stuff. I padded the inside with velvet cloth over cardboard and hot glued it in place.

Last two are my first try at pin hinges. Also first try at putting some shape to the base of the box. I like how it turned out but not happy with the way the purple heart finished in either of the boxs I used it in.

Boxes are fun! Yours look much better than just practice, good work. The corner splines are nice, I might borrow that idea.

I’m finishing up on my first set of 5, supposed to be Christmas presents but hoping no one missed them under the tree!

Excellent stuff Mike. Clean and classic… love it.

Mike, it is difficult to comment on a posting with so much variety. I would have made 3 or 4 posts of these. Your splines look good and I like the arch in the bottom of your last box. I have good luck with Purple Heart (and most other woods) using this finishing technique.

It looks like you are trying a number of techniques and having fun with the experimentation. That is the fun of boxes. You can try out various things and if it doesn’t work…it is only a box not some furniture piece you have spent weeks and weeks making. Keep boxing and keep posting.

Thanks for the tips Al. I haven’t tried Tung oil yet but been thinking about it. I will give it a try on my next one.
I will post the results.

Thanks agean
