Cutting Board

I needed something to do while putting finish on the two table lamps. Was running out of time till wife and I left Arizona to come back to Washington so needed a small project that could be finished in 4 days.

I have a gazillion wood strips saved from other projects so it would be “free”. Brought it back with us to do the finishing.

This board is made of 5 wood varieties, Maple, Walnut, Voire, Oak & Purple Heart. Finish is Howard Butcher Block Conditioner.

The first picture was layout in unglued condition to check joints. Cleaned up edges and glued into 3 groups of 5 strips.

I got lazy and glued the 3 groupings at the same time and got a bit of the dreaded “clamping bow”. Actually was not too bad, approximately 1/16”. Always regret getting impatient. Used my favorite bar clamps, Jorgensen Cabinet clamps.

Going to be a Christmas present for our son’s family. They have several boards already that are built by Annie’s father, a very skilled wood crafter. But those are pieces of art and don’t get used.

I personally like a good looking and usable cutting board. I’ve made a raft load of artistic boards that are really not used. The one I made for us is used hard, everyday. It looks great and we enjoy the fact it can b used as intended. I’m sure you son’s family will enjoy it for years to come. Good job.

I intend to leave a note inside the package telling them the wood species and that it is intended to use everyday. Also giving him a bottle of Howard BBC.

Thanks for the comment.

The picture came out nicely. I took several inside and no pizazz. I was a rare sunny in the Pacific Northwest so I went outside and took the shot.

I make about 2 cutting boards a year, make good presents and fill holes in your wood working schedule. Plus my wood strip pile is down to a gazillion minus 15.
