Last year I was lucky enough to visit a very good friend in Vejer de la Frontera, Andalusia, Spain. It’s a wonderful place and we had a fantastic time.

That trip was the inspiration for this box.

I just wanted to recreate, in some small way, the visuals in Vejer and Andalusia. Brillaint tile work everywhere, unexpectedly narrow, steep streets, passageways, alleys, arches and rooftops at odd elevations, buildings skewed at angles to each other (there are no right angled corners in the box), Moorish architecture…

I’ll never forget that trip.

Wow, Steve, thats like the most beautiful miniature shopping mall I ever saw. No, seriously, in photo #4, sorta reminds me a of FLW inspired design.

I showed this to my wife, asked what she thought. She said it looked very complicated, and that it reminded her of a Spanish/Roman villiage. So I think you nailed that one.

I havent been to Vejer, but am sure there must be a castle there; was the castle part of your inspiration for the design?

Favorite detail, the central arched handle. The mosaics also, are phenomenal.

Black palm and serpent wood, yes?

I see what ya did there with the “olive” colour lining. Nice touch.

Brian, what is FLW? Now, that I look at it, it does seem a bit like a shopping mall, like in Hollywood or Vegas, where they might have a Statue of Liberty next to a Egyptian temple…

Tell your wife “Thanks.” I was hoping someone might see the references.

My wife and I laughingly call the central arch handle “The Bridge at Ronda” which we crossed when we were there. Have you seen it? If not, please google it. My little handle doesn’t really do it justice, for sure, but the experience of walking over it remains with us. Terrifying. Wonderful.

The woods are curly sycamore, black palm and snakewood (serpentwood?), holly, pear, maple, and boxwood.

I don’t think there’s any castles in Vejer, but the town itself – one of the white villages – is a 13th century fortress high on a hill overlooking the Andalusian plains. Extremely photogenic – there’s dozens of travel videos about it on YouTube. The fortress walls are still there and have been converted to residences – yes, really, inside the walls – incredible spaces.

If you’re interested, there’s more about the trip on my site.

And, I have to tell you – my wife and I pick out the color for the leather interior in my boxes. She and I never connected “Olive” – and the leather is called “Olive” – with our experience. Had no idea. But you’re probably quite right – unconsciously picking olive after seeing all the groves. Just never made the connection. Thanks!

`Ats right, what I meant.

Snakewood/serpentwood – igual. Y muy caro!!!

It is a compliment, Steve, that you took my shopping-mall reference and rolled with it and made it funnier:)) Thanks for being gracious.

Yep, I can see how walking over this would remain in oneĀ“s memory>>>>>
