My best friend’s son was getting married this summer. They posted on their wedding registry a headboard from a big box chain store that was probably vinyl covered pressed wood. My wife told me that was unacceptable! LOL
They wanted to stick with the Mid-Century Modern design and gave me a color target. ( discussed in this Forum post )
Bed was drawn up in SketchUp. Maple was wood of choice due to similarity of grain with the acacia in a photo they provided. Sanded through 180 grit. Charles Neil’s Blotch Control with light scuff sanding after each application. Sprayed 2 coats General Finishes Medium Brown water based Dye Stain. Top coated with Sherwin Williams’ Sherwood lacquer vinyl sanding sealer and top coat.
Slats (pic 5) are ash and made per Charles Neil’s T-Slats video. They are rock solid!
Side rails seated with Rockler's Bed Rail Brackets.
This was the first time I sprayed dye stain. While I am happy with the finished product (pic 4), I do feel like I used alot of stain. Perhaps it was the cheap spray gun, or maybe my technique.
The most important thing… Chad and Colby LOVED it!

That turned out beautifully. I am sucker for the mid-century modern look.

Love this. I’m wanting to build a bed, and deciding on the style. I really like this!
