Remember “Magic Eye” back in the 1990s? I remember just about every shopping mall had a kiosk selling these funky posters, books, and calendars. Magic Eye is the brand name for stereograms, a repeating 2D pattern that reveals a 3D image when it is viewed in a certain way.

For this project, which I call, “Nymphaea”, I wanted to see if I could create (what I believe to be) the word’s first layered wooden stereogram. Nymphaea utilizes two 1/8” layers of repeating 2D patterns. With the correct focus, the patterns will merge and display a 3D image of a lily and lily pads.

I used several software packages and had to develop some new techniques in order to generate a stereogram that could be converted into vectors that could then be cut via CNC. I was also able to develop a simplified, circular-hole-only version of the pattern that can be cut using just a drill press.

If you’ve never viewed a stereogram before, I’ve got instructions on how to do so on my website. I’ve also put together detailed woodworking plans for Nymphaea if you’re interested in building your own:

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this!

Haven’t seen one of those in years – good work! Maybe a cutting board like that epoxy filled? Curious as to what CNC machine you’re using. So far I’m making 90% sawdust (and 90% fun) with a slightly upgraded Shapeoko (no end-stops, better motor and a slightly beefed up cutter). My last project was making a beard comb. Trying to riffle over the teeth made them all fall out – I immediately went in and brushed my teeth so they wouldn’t do the same.
