OCT 15, 2020
I had a request for a step stool for a short asian lady who needed something to reach her upper kitchen cabinets.
I designed this simple 2 step stool made from cabinet grade plywood. All pieces were glued together. Each tread measures 15 inches wide X 10 inches deep. From the floor to the top of the first tread is 7 inches as is the distance from the top of first tread to top of second tread.
The feet were designed to give it an asian flavor.
The back of the stool has a little compartment with a lip to store small items.
To convey love a weight reducing cut out in the shape of a heart was placed in the 2nd riser . The back of the 2nd tread has a cutout for a convenient carry handle.
A box core router bit was used to put grooves in each tread for traction.
Each side of the stool has another weight reducing pierced pattern. This is a simple appliqué pattern that might be found on a Hawaiian quilt.
The stool was primed and finished with a light green latex paint. The grooves in the treads were painted white. The total weight of the step stool is 12 pounds.
PROJECT SUMMARY
Before gluing the pieces together I used blue painters tape to mask off the areas to be glued then primed and painted all the inside surfaces. The all the pieces were glued up in stages starting with the sides, front riser and back cross pieces. The compartment bottom and back were also glued in place with this group.
Next glue up stage involved the first tread and 2nd riser with heart cut out.
The last piece to be glue was the top tread.
Grooves were cut in the treads before they were glued.
Sanding, priming and painting completed the project.
Although painting the pierced cut outs was the most difficult part of this project it was worth it.
Thanks for looking.

Nice job ty’...
Looks like you have all bases covered as I just couldn’t find a smart (or not so) assed quip to add.

She does look like a short lady… You might have to build her a smaller step stool for the STEP STOOL.

Have your say...
