Built a twin bed for my 8 year old son out of red oak. The bed is based on Jeff Miller’s “First Bed” design in his book, Beds. The major change I made was to use double tenons (with the top tenon glued and the bottom one floating) to attach the headboard panel to the posts (Miller’s plans called for a single, unglued, shallow tenon that is held to each post with a single screw). I also decided to make the headboard taller so that my son can sit back against it while reading in bed. I finished it with 2 coats of Varathane classic red oak stain, 2 coats of dark walnut danish oil, and 3 coats of Arm-R-Seal. Overall, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, and my son loves the bed!

I like it. Simple, clean lines. I’m sure your son will enjoy it for years to come.
