Project Information

I wanted to start making flutes and such on my turnings and after a little research this is what I came up to fit my needs. A big thanks to LJ Jim Jakosh for answering questions and for a couple cool ideas. Like the lexan top, you can make it out of wood but a clear top helps to see whats going on.
Its 15'' x 15'' x 15'' cube. Four slots cut on the sides to hold the top straight or on any angle up to 40 degrees left or right. I can router out up to a 13 1/2'' flute. A router bushing fits in the lexan top slot to guide it along. The t-track lets the t-bolts slide easily to whatever adjustment you need. I made 4 wooden knobs that will tighten the top to the sides with the t-bolts. It bolts down to the rails in the lathe just like a tool rest. I also added a stop for smaller cuts.

I'll add a few more pics below to give you a better idea how it was built.
Any questions or comments are welcomed.
I added a few more process shots below.

Start off making a 3 sided box to any size that will fits your needs.

Cut 4 slots, 2 on each side to guide the top.

I framed in the lexan to give it sturdiness so it won't flex wit the router on it. I used 1/4'' lexan.

A guide on the bottom to keep slide it in the lathe rails.

A stop when needed for shorter cuts.

The top lexan piece is held together with 4 screws in the wood frame. I also have the idea of changing the design in the lexan and interchanging the top to make different designs later. Should be interesting.
Thanks for looking.

Nice build Dave but how so you deal with the dust collection? Also, I would be interested in how you built your indexing mechanism.

Great design and build, Dave. You will love using it, too. I like the T track ides for adjustability for the angle. All you need is a Wixie box to find the angle on the piece and set your top plate to it and you are ready to follow the angle..

Cheers, Jim

Very clever design Dave. I can't wait to see all the new things you can produce with your new jig! It's nice to have good people with good ideas to help you like Jim Jakosh and others in your research. Oh and I love seeing those extra photos you added in here. Great work as always!

I'm not sure what it has to do with flutes, and I'm getting pretty dizzy just thinking about it, Dave. ;-)

But it's very nice work!

Looks like a super handy jig to have, provided you have the lathe too.

Thanks Ivan.

Hi Lee. I'm working on setting a removable panel on the end that will accept a 4'' hose from the collector. That should take care of most of the dust but I'm in early stages of that.
The indexing system works great. Jim Jakosk posted his a few years ago and made it out of metal. I pretty much did the same only out of wood. He had a jig that you attached to the back of the lathe so you can take the 24 pick ups and turn it into 72. Check these out and see if it helps any.

Thanks Dick. I almost have one project finished and another one on the lathe now. It's a cool jig.

Jim thanks. Another good idea of yours using the wixey to find the needed angle. I'll use that idea on my next turning. Thanks for the help. You are the jig master. I'm still throwing around a coupe ideas to add on but for now I'm going to play with it.

Thanks Tony. I'll be posting a few things soon. Every time I go near it I think of another idea to add on. It's going to keep me busy for awhile. Just when you think you have everything figured out someone like Jim can add a few more.LOL.

Thanks for the favorite hoss12992 . If you have any questions let me know.

Thanks pottz. After asking Jim a question he showed me the one he made and things just added up from there. Nothing like having the best help around when you're trying to do something.

Hi Dave, good one. Maybe if you put your ear close enough when making a flute you can actually hear it. LOL.

Thanks Brian. As others have mentioned before on this site, buying the lathe is the cheapest part of having one. After that things can really add up.

Thanks Bob. It's going to be fun learning new things with it.

Thanks Cliff.

I don't have a nice lathe like yours to be able to use a setup like this but sure like it Dave .
Nice idea and a groovy jig that you will use a lot .
Way back when I worked at a stair shop we did a lot of grooving in stair baluster with a router mounted on the tool holder .

Wow, that's quite elaborate Dave. Looks very well made. Nice job on your first cutting with it. I'll add it to my favourites but I'm afraid the list of things to do is getting too long.

Hi Klaus. Sounds like you are a old pro at making grooves. You can make this set up to fit any lathe. When you come across a plain looking turning this could be a good way to highlight it.
Maybe I should call it the groovy jig maker.

Thanks John. This could be a project for those long winters. I'm with you, I have a list of things wanting to do but instead go ahead and do something else.

Thanks Tom. I wanted to make things more interesting, not like I don't have enough to learn. LOL.
