First ever Chessboard. Had been wanting to try one for a long time. Similar to cutting boards in a lot of ways. These are .5 inch thick squares of Ash and walnut. They are on a substrate/base of .75 inch furniture grade plywood. The squares have a .5 inch border of ash then whole thing is wrapped with 1 inch thick walnut. I used a Roman-Ogee bit for the edges. Lots of gluing/fitting/fiddling to get all the corners near perfect. I cut strips for 2 more at same time so maybe the second and third one will go faster. Finish is multiple coats of natural Danish Oil. Lot of buffing with soft cotton as a final step. Made for my son and grandson for chess and checkers to while away the coronavirus hours. Would like to wrap each square in a light wood, maybe 1/16th inch thick on the next one. Will have to make playing pieces sometime I guess now!

Nice build. Thanks for all of the details. Great use of scraps, I think I’ll try one!

Nice work Dennis!
It’ll be a pleasure to play on that gameboard and the ash and walnut are a great combo.

Have your say...
