Knife block in Cherry

Needed a knife block to go with a gift knife set. I had some 4/4 Cherry that was rough sawn in the shop about 12” wide and 40” long.
All hand tools on this project.
Flattened and squared with hand planes. Saw work by hand. Rabbeting block planes and shoulder planes for the grooves.
All flattening and joining with planes and chisels in some corners.

Nice block. Am I correct in thinking the back side is a cookbook holder?

Not seeing it populated I’m having trouble dreaming of what goes into the 2 larger holes?

It’s cool you used all hand tools.

Yes Sorry all. Back ledge is for a cookbook or maybe a tablet. The top square hole is for the sharpening steel and the bottom oblong hole is for kitchen shears
