Jewelry Box

This jewelry box was completed in January 2020. It features walnut, maple and padauk woods. It measures approximately 12” x 9” x 3.5” tall without the lid.

Box sides are connected with dovetail joints made on a Porter Cable jig.

Lid has a mitered frame of walnut with a strip of maple. The inside edge of the lid was rabbeted out to provide a shelf for the padauk wood insert. It was decided to screw in the padauk insert panel so it could be removed and replaced in the future (due to the tendency of padauk to darken with age.)

The bottom is baltic birch plywood covered with velvet. There is a small sliding upper tray that is supported on rails.

Hinges ares “stop hinges” with a 95 degree opening limit.

Finish was 5 or 6 coats of Deft spray lacquer rubbed out with foam sanding pads.

I made this box for our Arizona home as my wife already had a very nice walnut jewelry box built by my father at our home in Washington State. I have a stepdaughter and one daughter in law, so there is one for each at the end of my wood working days.

This was the first time making dovetail joints, a lot of poplar test pieces were used to adjust the jig for tight fitting joints.

The box looks very nice. I like the finish and choice of woods. I bet she is very happy.
