This is a 14 Layens frame hive. The inner box was built with 1.25” Avantec plywood and 2×4 bottom. Then it was wrapped in 3/4” foam insulation and then 1/2” plywood. The sides are then finished with Hardi board caulked and painted.
The gabled top is 1/2” plywood, tar paper, and then aluminum flashing as a roof.
The stand is not pictured but it was done with 2×6 legs and used Shelac to seal the wood.
I built the frames as well out of old 2×4s.
The plywood and paint were the only things I had to buy. The rest was from dumpster diving on a construction site! Make sure you ask permission but most don’t care.
This hive was based on Dr. Leo’s free plans from horizontal hive website.
Now to get the bees installed!
