Two years ago one of the men teaching a leather workshop with me ( to the boy scouts) gave me a nice piece of black walnut. He explained his wife tried to pitch it when they cleaned out the garage “ no dear, I know just who this is going to!” He declared.
Last fall I turned it on a lathe – my first mallet made on a lathe. It was super rewarding and so fascinating to watch it transform.
Im so impressed with the skills and talents displayed here on lumberjocks and hope to learn to turn further.
So this year at the same scout event I brought the turned walnut mallet
When I showed it to the man who gave me the piece of walnut he was very excited and said “ wow how very cool!” I was glad he liked it and was glad to add it to my collection. Well I should probably work on my verbal skills because then he said “ thank you so much, I will put it to good use!”
He mistakenly thought I gave it to him to keep, when I intended to simply show it to him.
I wasnt sure what to say or do, so I replied, “I am so glad you like it.”

Now I am looking for my next piece of black walnut …

A small chisel mallet is on my list of turnings. That’s a funny story and I wish you were closer so I could “give” you some wood to turn for me. :D

Well done – a beautiful tool. Now you can use everything you’ve learned on the next one to keep.

Good looking mallet! You’ll have another before you know it.
