So for my swap item going to Arlin, I decided on an Ulu knife since i’ve wanted to make one. I figured what’s an Ulu knife without a cutting board though so that was obviously going to be made for the swap also.

The board is walnut, maple, purple heart and padauk. This board is set up to be double sided with an offset recess on one side for the ulu and the other flat for regular board use. To make the recess, I used my lathe to do some outboard turning against the better advice of Grant. You can see a quick clip of it on my FB page linked here.

Once the recess matched the knife, it was sanded down and then got 3 coats of General Finish’s salad bowl finish.

After talking to Grant some more, we decided to match the Ulu knife handle to the board. This was done as much to scale as I could get it with most being right except the maple being a little thicker. It was pinned in to place with stainless steel pins. For a finish, it got a thick coat of CA and was sanded and buffed the best I could get it. I think this knife cut my 3 times total… Once was when it was getting packaged.

Ahhhhh. I misunderstood in the thread pics. I thought the recess was to store the Ulu. Now I see that it fits the blade curve. I guess the lathe was the right tool after all! That’s really slick man. Like really slick.

I’m gonna guess you didn’t forge the damascus Ulu? Where’d you get it?

Great work man. The package as a whole kicks major ass!

Yeah that was for the recess to match the knife. I wish I had the capability and space to learn top forge, but I don’t. The knife came from https://www.damascusknivesshop.com/

Nice, Rich! That cutting board is gorgeous, and while I’ve never used an ulu as a daily driver, I can see where it would be useful.

OOOH Rich, that turning looks dangerous. Glad you pulled it off. And that knife, whoa, I want one, looks super scary sharp.

I love the set you made Rich! Never heard of a Ulu knife by name before but it looks really cool. I hope Arlin doesn’t cut himself with it also ;-)

My BIL gifted me with an Ulu after he was at Fort Richardson for a while. Love that knife. I like the matching woods, nice touch.
