Made to fit jumbo Crayola crayons. Broad faces are poplar, sides, ends and homemade hinges are black walnut. I got creative with one and made “Cray-Cray” (the monster). His teeth are made from craft foam and eyes are screws and finish washers. Finish is spray lacquer.

How very whimsical!
Cool teeth and eyes. Wooden hinge is fantastic.

The wooden hinges take a bit of work, but yes, they definitely give me a sense of satisfaction. It helps to make them up in batches since there is a fair amount of setup involved. I like to make 8-10 at a time from a single board that’s milled to the correct thickness.

My wife asked me to make a crayon box for our son and I somehow steamrolled the project into learning to do the hinges, some CNC engraving, and eventually making 20 or so boxes for gifts and for sale. The people at Target were probably wondering why we bought all of their jumbo crayons three trips in a row. The monster idea was a random thought that came to mind while fitting the hinges. A catchy song was playing on the radio as I opened and closed the box. My motion synced up with the beat and I started to see a little monster mouth opening and closing. Add some screws and a piece of cut foam and here we are…Monster Box!
