Several years ago we had the family and living rooms carpet replaced with hardwood. I had helped a friend lay #1 clear hickory in his house. I liked the hickory but the #1 didn’t have enough character for me so we got #2 common. When I first saw it I thought I had made a mistake, with as many knots as were in the boards. The guy laying it said it would be fine. He was right. The grain really popped when he put the clear coat on. All the holes were filled with clear epoxy and sanded. To make them look black, a piece of black construction paper was placed below each knot. We ordered 10% more wood to cover for any defects. As it turned out I had enough hickory left over for me to do the hallway and a mantle for the fireplace. Now I have a place to hang my Christmas Stocking.
