Project Information

My daughter's cat passed away and she asked if I would make a urn for her.
She likes modern furniture so that gave me ideas for this box.
I inlayed the top with 1/8 brass and the splines on the sides are also brass.
The legs are 1/4 in brass tubes let into the boxand the bottom platform.
It's made of poplar and dyed with Black Sumi ink and finished it with gloss lacquer.
Sumi ink is a true black and you don't see the grain like you would with dye or stain.

Nice combination with the wood and brass Rich. I especially like the brass legs, definitely gives it a modern look. It will make a great resting place.

The finish makes it look like oriental lacquerware. Very pretty, I'm going to look up Sumi ink and make a couple of small jewelry boxes with that finish

I picked up the Sumi ink at Blicks Art supply but I think any art supply store will have it, another name for it is India ink. Also its water base so you have to raise the grain first before applying. For some reason you cannot put poly over it, it gums up. lacquer is the best thing I found as a top coat. Good luck on your project!
