SCROLL SAW BOWL MADE FROM POINCIANA LOG

A friend gave me a small log nearly 2 years ago and it was dripping wet and very heavy.
But now it has dried out and is remarkably light in weight. It is also a very soft wood, I think it is POINCIANA.

It has a very unusual Grain / Figuring running through it. Sanding was easy enough because of the softness, but I knew it would be difficult to achieve a gloss. So after numerous coats of Organic Danish Oil I Buffed it by hand..
The finished result is the best I can do. If anybody has any suggestions please feel free to say. I would be most interested.
I would love to achieve a gloss on most Projects.

It was cut on the Scroll Saw from one of Carole Rothman’s Patterns..

The Bowl is made up of 4 rings and a Base cut at 28 Deg.

Kind regards,

Cliff.

Hi Dick,
Thank you. Yes a most intriguing grain. I have quite a bit of the Log left. It would be interesting what a Bud Vase or Lidded Box would like like from that Log. Stand by,I will see what I can do.
Regards,

Cliff.

G’day Jim,
Thank you. The Poinciana Tree looks a bit like the Jacaranda Tree. The Bark is more smooth than the Jacaranda. The Jacaranda has Purple Flowers and the Poinciana has Reddish flowers.

Bob, Thank you. I was wondering if next time I use that wood, maybe I should mill it from a different side to alter the position of that squiggley grain? I still have some of the log left.

Cliff.

Poinciana ? Yep a new one on me too but it a pretty wood. Nice looking bowl Cliff.
Next time try rubbing on the first two coats of Danish mixed 50/50 with lacquer thinner and a piece of used 220 sand paper. Rub it in like you are sanding the bowl. It can be sloppy so wear gloves. It will almost dry as you sand. Wipe off any extra with rag. It will seal up the pores quickly.
