This is Made from the upright Post of an old set of stairs. Around 70 years old and is a very old Australian Hard Wood. Photo Number 4 Shows part of the original Post. It will be interesting to attempt more projects using this very hard wood.
My Turning skills need a lot of practice as I had a Devil of a jog trying to hollow the Box. I kept sharpening and Honing my Chisels as I progressed. This helped to avoid some of the catches. Main thing is I had a ball just being in the shop. It was a Ton of Fun and kept me off the streets. Ha ha ha ha..

After sanding I applied I think 4 coats of Danish Oil and rubbed gently between coats with 0000 Steel Wool;.

Kind regards,

Cliff.

Nice work Cliff, good to see your back in the shed and having fun. Hows the isolation going? I still can’t get motivated but have many projects started. Cheers, stay safe.

Looks very nice Cliff. I see your point of saving the rest of the post. Maybe now you can try a tall vase from the wood. That wood is older than me. LOL.

Beautiful box, Cliff. Is that Jarrah or Rimu?

Cheers, Jim

Bob, my word, its good to be back in the shop. No worries with the isolation. Heaps of things to do. I will look forward to seeing your next project.
Regards,
Cliff.

Dave, sad to say that I am older than the wood..Ha ha ha..But that’s okay.. Yes I actually have another length stashed away, so I best sharpen my tools and have a think of what to do with it.
Regards,
Cliff.

Thanks Jim, not really sure what it is. There are many Hard Woods in Australia. Possibly Iron Bark. It is very heavy and close grained. I will weigh it tomorrow and let you know its weight.
Regards,
Cliff.

That’s a real nice chunk of wood you got Cliff! Lovely little box and my wife likes the finish too. Have you thought of turning a sphere?

Hi Cliff, That is really lovely piece of wood, whatever it is.
Love the finish on it.
Thanks for sharing,

Bob

-- Bob, Western Australia, The Sun came up this morning, what a great start to the day. Now it's up to me to make it even better. I've cut this piece of wood 4 times and it's still too damn short.

Gorgeous colour and grain in that old timber post Cliff.
The original piece looks like an old brick, so that’d explain the reason for having to reshaped the tools.

John…Thank you for the nice Comments. I am pleased also that your Wife likes the finish. John, yes I have thought of turning a sphere. I have googled it on youtube, so one day I would love to turn a sphere.
Regards,
Cliff

Hi Bob, nice to hear from you. Thank you, sorry but I really don’t know what kind of wood it is. Possibly iron bark?
Glad you like the finish. It was a very hard wood and a really tight grain..
Regards,
Cliff.

Peter. Thank you. Yes it does look like an Old Brick….Just as hard as an Old Brick as well.
Regards,
Cliff.

Hey Cliff, If you want brick to turn, try western Queensland Gidgee.
