Walnut and Sycamore box

A while back I became facinated with dowel rod hinges and have made more than several box using that system. It’s probably not as tricky and tedius as barrel hinges of for that matter (for ME ) any kind of hinge. I was just never good at any kind of hinge so the dowel rod intriged me.
This box is 3/8” walnut body with 1/4 sawn sycamore borders and the lid framed with sycamore. The corners are mitered and rienforced with 1/4” hardwood dowel rod pieces about 2” long cut from a 36” length. The bottom is a piece of 1/4” ply with a blue velvet glued in place.
The hinge is a 3/8” waunut dowel rod drilled and cut to an eye pleasing symetrical appearance.
Picture 4 is a prime example of sycamore – same board but the body shows the 1/4 sawn and the lid show the flat sawn? with the 1/4 sawn on the top. It’s funny how one piece of wood can be so different just by turning it 90 degrees.
A closeup of the miter dowels

Thanks for looking and if you get a chance, try the dowel rod hinge – a challenge and rewarding

Nice looking project, great detail work with the contrasting woods, beatiful.
Dowel rod hinge, huh, guess I gotta give that a try. It’s a nice way to kind of hide the hinge with the blending of the woods.

Did you take any construction photos?, curious about this hinge.

That is a nice clean looking box.Good combination of contrasting woods. I’m trying to figure out the hinge. Is it cut in 3 pieces with a pin in the center and the center piece fastened to the bottom and the side pieces fastened to the top?

cheers, Jim

That´s a real classy lookin box, Man. Like one of those, hmm, this one I think I will be keeping for myself, kinda boxes.

Hinges are my downfall also, and barrel hinges, meh….......

Thanks Brian, This will probably end up a gift to someone
I can’t even do little brass hinges, never get them lined up right, screws always get off center etc. etc. etc.

Love the mix of woods Dick. Pretty neat box.

The hinges, be they difficult or not, they are another piece of the total, and if you don’t nail the hinge look to the box. It’s the box that suffers. With a pivot rod, it’s out of sight, so it can’t sabotage the box.

That is one trick hinge Dick!

I know how that sycamore has lots of chatoyance, ti can get annoying when you figure out the exact part layout for a nice appearance, only to find that a quarter turn messes it all up.

You done good, very attractive!

Thanks

Yeah, I think the hinge was the hardest part on this box
