I was shamed into posting this project I had made for Christmas a while back. I mentioned little fish in some of my work and someone said, “What are you talking about? I can’t find any tiny fishies!” My apologies to Brian for misspeaking and my thanks to him for pushing me to do the right thing – admitting my guilt and making proper restitution!
I made a number of boxes when I first got into CNC work, most notably the food series (which I did post!). This was a fun present for a lovely young lady who loved penguins. I used black oak for the body, cedar for the beak and feet, pine and walnut for the eyes, poplar for the belly/lid and small scraps of cherry for the fish tie. The original prototype had a striped tie as the lid really needed a handle but I thought the fish tie was much more appropriate.

Nice! I agree, this is a great thing to post, shows the fun and creativity in Woodworking, and at least for me contain far more challenges than it appears to have on the surface.

I personally love these type projects, as they push my skills beyond my comfort zone, something I continuously strive to do.

-- Im so impressed with what people can do, and I wonder how they do it. Thats what keeps me doing it.

Nice, Mike! I like the striped tie too, but I think the fish tie is better by a fin.

I like them both Mike. The eyes are great and I love the big feet. What stops the lid falling out when it is standing up?

Tony – You are more than a little biased (but I respect that in a friend!)...

Tom! Missed seeing you on here lately! What are you working on these days? Couple good swaps coming up if you can spare the time…

Brit – Thanks for you comments! It is a bit silly but so is life in general! When I first thought about the fish tie I thought it was over the top… ...but then I realized we are talking about a goofy looking penguin box! It was a perfect fit!

The ‘big feet’ cause him to lean back a bit and the weight of the tie holds the door shut just fine. I thought about magnets but decided it was overkill!

Thanks Ivan and Chris! I did a little Teddy Bear box for a niece who was really into “Build a Bear” – a machine at the mall where you designed you own Teddy Bear (I’ve never seen it but I’ve seen what she spends all her extra money on!)

It didn’t hold much but $20 bills…
