Inspired by Jeffswildwood post, here is the birdhouse I built with my 14 year old daughter just to keep her occupied.
I mainly wanted to see how difficult it would be to recreate the “Lincoln Logs” that make this house.
With a dado blade in my radial arm saw it took some time to “dial-it-in” but it wasn’t hard after that. A quick pass on each long side at the router table using a round-over bit and that was it.
Radial arm saws have a tendency to run toward you especially with a dado blade in them and cutting hard wood like this oak so I was leery about letting my daughter try this solo. But with a lot of instruction and some practice with me holding the handle with her, my daughter was able to use the saw by herself so that was a cool learning experience for her.
We added the siding details and roof shingles using quart stir-sticks I purchased at Home Depot. This helped hide the screws that were required for fastening the roof.
Turned out well and I gave it to my mom (her Grandmother) for Mother’s day and she loved it.
Each “log” is 7 inches long. Glued and brad nailed to each other through the notches. The siding and shingles were glued and pin nailed as well.
Even though it does have outdoor Poly on it, I don’t expect it will last many years in the Wisconsin weather but that doesn’t matter…....we’ll just build another one.
A fun evening build with my daughter.

Nice birdhouse. It’s great working with kids in the shop. I’m a scout leader and we just finished one of our
scouts Eagle project. We built 20 birdhouses and 5 Bat houses for a local zoo. It was amazing how interested these kids were in the process. Keep up the good work and stay safe!

This came out really nice my friend! I like the touches you did with the craft sticks. I may have to keep that in mind. :-)) Plus what could be better then working on a project with your Daughter! Making a bird house and memories. I do like it when someone does one of my projects. Seeing the twist they put on it and I’m glad I was able to inspire and help you out. Using oak I think it will last longer then you think! I also did a blog for the build if anyone else would like to try it. Great job to you and your Daughter!
