Toy Box Chest

I was asked by one of our cousins to build a toy box for her daughter. They just wanted a plane pine box but, after my last cabinet project with raised panels I figured that would make them a bit more interesting piece that would be more than a toy box later on down the road. Clear pine was used for the box with a plywood bottom. The frame and panel sides are joined with rabbit joints and glue only and sit atop the foot assemble frame. The lid panel consists of 1” X 6” glued together with a simple round over on the edges. For a final touch I personalized the piece by router carving their last name into the front panel (a task I haven’t performed in over 10 years). For hinges I use euro stile and added the soft close struts on the sides to avoid pinched fingers (not to mention watching a soft closing lid is very satisfying).

There is more to this story than just a toy box chest however. The request to build it was at Thanks Giving dinner of 2019 and the due date was Christmas Eve. Naturally, the day after I purchased the lumber I came down with a cold and wound up getting sick one more time before it was all said and done. All this on top of trying to finish up other Christmas gifts. I’m not sure how I managed to get it all done but, I wound up have a couple of days to relax before everything was delivered on Christmas Eve and Day lol. There’s nothing like a good challenge to keep the mined sharp.

Thanks for stopping by,

Matthew Stillwell
