Quick and dirty dovetail marker

Next big project is my brace till which I’ve started, but I need to cut the dovetails for the corners of the carcass next, and couldn’t find my dovetail marker. Rather than completely wing it, I grabbed a scrap a katalox and set up my shooting board at 14 degrees (which is darned close to 1:4), and then found a piece of elm to put that katalox into. A couple cuts with the saw, a little trimming with a knife, and a dowel later, I had the marker mostly done. Glued it up, then did a little practice carving to label it so I won’t get confused later. A coat of oil, and it’s ready to go.

Looks like I need to practice carving serifs some more, but otherwise I’m happy with it.

Looks good to me, even the carving.

Thanks, Tom & Tony. I see the little boogers in the serifs, but that’s part of why I’m practicing before I start carving the sign I’m supposed to do for our house.

I like your carving just as much as your dovetail marker. Nice work Dave.

Thanks, guys. It should do the trick. Hopefully I can start laying out the dovetails tomorrow morning and cutting them.

Thank you, Mads! I was happy to have a scrap of katalox left from making the spokeshave. It should hold up almost as well as brass!

Only the guy making that would have any criticism. Looks like an excellent job to me.
