I wanted to make my Dad a nice cane. I do not have a lathe so I decided to invest in a spokeshave and wood rasp and set out to make one the hard way. I laminated two 1/2inch walnut and 1/4inch cherry and left the cherry protruding about 5 inches at one end. After cutting the shaft down to 1 1/4 square, I glued up the handle parts. Using a template, I cut out the handle shape on the bandsaw. After about 10 hours of shaving and rasping I had achieved the taper and fit I was looking for. I could have really used a spindle sander but made do with sandpaper on pieces of PVC pipe.

Nice looking cane! You did a great job with the laminations and the spokeshave work. It’s a beauty that your Dad will be proud to use.

Great job! And speaking from personal experience I have always found the “hard way” to be the most satisfying, especially when making something for a parent. I hope your dad gets many many good years of use from it.
