I have been promising this chess board for a long time, so with the quarantine I thought I better get to it. i had to use scraps and off cuts from around the shop, hence the choice of woods. The dark red wood is sapele and the light is bass wood. As you can see, the grain is similar in both woods. i did have to be very careful sanding because the bass wood is much softer than the sapele. I had planned for the outside trim boards to be white/red not red/white, but the bass wood board was not long enough span the whole width of the board. The finish is multiple coats of home mixed wipe on poly. All in all I’m pleased with the outcome.

Looks great. I did one of these years ago and know it’s more work than you’d think.
Thanks for posting.

Good to see your back woodworking. This was a lost year for me. I think I only made one cabinet door. I need to spend some time browsing for inspiration. Very nice work. The chess board will be a valued keepsake for sure. Will you be making a set of chess pieces or checkers?

Very nice! I’ve wanted to get back into woodworking during this lull, and a chess board seems like something I’d be interested in!

Have your say...
