We decided we would build an outside fire pit, for fun, and as a utility. The ‘utility’ option is for getting rid of yard waste. We have a lot of trees in the yard, and get lots of ‘parts’ on the ground. It is a real pain to have to drive a distance away to get rid of leaves, twigs, sticks, and sometimes heaver stuff, not to mention the debris left over from some CNC project (including getting rid of the evidence of those failed projects). As for the fun option, it’s great on cooler evenings to sit around a fire with friends, and enjoy sharing some wine and goodies with them. On cold nights the heat is great too.

The pit itself is a rim from a logging machine called a Skidder. On occasion they develop a split in the rim, so they no longer can hold air pressure, and they must be replaced. They are gnerally discarded or sold to a scrap dealer. The rim is about 3’ tall, and 32” in diameter, and weighs in at about 400lbs.

Now why post this on Lumberjocks, well with the fire pit, need places for people to sit, and tables for drinks and goodies. Attached are a couple of pictures of the benches and the tables. If anyone wants dimensional drawings of them, just let me know… Yet to build is a chair that is simply half of the bench….

We love it. had a 24” adjustable height swing out grill and pot hanger made for it to cook on. So after a nice fire we cook some burgers or dogs on it, We plan to try to do oysters on it, the way they did it yeas ago with a hot coal fire, a sheet of metal, and wet burlap bags. Have yet to try some rib eyes on it, but its in the plan…
