I built gates made from cedar fence pickets about 15 years ago. They were looking pretty sorry, and falling apart. So, made new ones, using 2” x 6” redwood planks. Made angle iron frames, welded with my trusty oxy-acetylene rig. Finished with Cabot “Indian Corn” color stain, frame is painted with the professional grade Rustoleum. I shot the bronze ceramic coated lag screws through the frame into the planks, and had intended to paint them to match the frame, but the wife saw them prior to paint, and liked the look. A little more industrial than I wanted, but all I really care is that these gates will last a lot longer than the old ones. My son was drilling the holes for the top hinge on the narrow gate while I held it up, but then discovered that that location was right where the stud in the wall was, so new holes had to be drilled. I’ll eventually hammer out a copper lizard to mount there to cover up those holes.

I like it. Looks a little Medieval. Won’t need to worry about tightening screws on the gate side latch either.

Thanks! I guess I should have said “traditional” in the reference words, if it looks Medieval to you. Now that you mention it, I see what you mean.

As a side note, does anyone know what the deal is with the “Home Refurbers” site!? I’d lay long odds that 99% of the posts there are spam. I’d have posted this project there as well, but some guy telling me where to find hookers…uh, excuse me…”escorts” in India isn’t my target audience. ???
