With the lock down in South Africa to prevent the spread of the Covid19 Corona virus we had to think about innovating ways to carry on with Sunday services without gathering people together in a church building. Given that the resources of a small congregation is limited with no budget to buy expensive electronic equipment, the easy answer is to use Facebook Live Streaming to have a virtual gathering of the congregation. All that is needed is a cell phone and a tripod to record the live stream.

We needed to come up with a plan to mount the cell phone on the tripod. This is the solution that I came up with. One modification I made was to put a groove in the side of the clamp as well as in the wedge to keep the cell phone from moving upwards when sliding the wedge clamps together to keep the cell phone in place.

I had a few pieces of cut off Rosewood so I used that. To screw the holder onto the tripod mount, I just tapped a thread into the wood using the screw itself, which should hold out just fine as Rosewood is quite hard.

The size of the cell phone holder was determined by the size of the off cuts I had available. A variation of this holder can also be used to make a holder for the cell phone to use it as an angle meter.

Thanks for looking. As always comments are welcome.

Really smart design! I have one of these that I bought and it basically has two spring-loaded jaws that clamp the phone in place. I really like your wedge idea, and especially the little ties you made to keep them all with the center piece. Nice work!

Now that’s one clever engineering with timber sir….

Lots of churches using the “zoom” platform downunder…
