“Nostepinne” (or “nostepinde”) is a Scandinavian word that means “nest-stick.”.

The Nostepinne is used to wind yarn into a tight ball. The yarn can be pulled from the center of the ball and maintain more even tension on the yarn as the knitter uses it. These are tapered to allow the knitter to easily remove the ball from the stick.

These are cherry, maple, and walnut, 10-1/2 inches long.

My Nostepinnes are an optional item which can be included with my yarn bowls:

New to me, but looks like a neat little tool that could be very handy. Thanks for sharing.

New to me also, had a fun time looking it up.
I can’t really find the origion of the word, best guess is Norway, due to the spelling.
Pinne = stick:
Pind – Danish so not Danish
Pinne – Norwegan and Swedish
Noste = nøste
Nøste in Norwegian = yearn ball
But quite fun to look up, you can try to search the Danish word GARNNØGLE PIND up also for inspiration.
Fine work you did.
Best thoughts,
Mads

Mads: You are correct … Nostepinne (or Nøstepinne) is Norwegian. And a search for Garnnøgle Pind turns up many videos on knitting … I wish Grandpa Hans would have taught us more Danish!

Thanks Mads … my wife (the ‘fabric artist’ in the family) was looking over my shoulder and has now tasked me with making different designs of things for knitting!

;-) Then you will be busy through the crisis, that’s wonderful.
My best thoughts to both of you,
Mads
