Made this fly fishing net for a fellow fly fishing friend, and then decided to give him something else. So, it sat (or rather, hung) in my shop for months.

Received a call recently, however, from the manager of our local Orvis retailer to ask if I might donate a fishing net to an upcoming fundraiser. Gladly donated this net for that occasion and glad to meet the happy winner.

The wood in the handle is teak and padauk, the hoop is ash. I used a loose tenon to secure the heel and then epoxied a short section of 3/8” stainless pipe into the bottom of the handle for a lash strap. I sprayed the handle with satin polyurethane to waterproof, using a pipe cleaner to apply finish and waterproof inside the holes of the hoop.

Have been using DAP Plastic Resin successfully for laminating hoops and handles. It mixes with water, has a decent working time and sets hard (beware, and sharp) as glass. Cleans up with warm water, assuming it hasn’t hardened. Otherwise it will become permanently attached to anything it touches.

I’ve also learned that Johnson’s Paste Wax works great to keep excess glue from bonding the handle/hoop to your laminating fixture. I apply a heavy coat to anything that will be touching the net before I start slinging glue, but try to keep the wax away from any surface that will be glued together.

Wish I’d taken a few pics of the winner with her new net, that would have added a nice touch! Hope she sends me a picture of her and her net, with a nice fish!

Another nice piece of work!

I think Orvis was my favorite “mail order” store when I was young. Of course, it was my mom who did the buying.

Beautiful. Do you know off hand what size hoop that is?

- BigShooter

Thanks. It’s 48” circumference, so relatively large.
