Keepsake box with hidden drawers. I would like to say this build was fun, but it wasnt. I will spare everyone the details. It is the end result that counts, and so, I am happy with the outcome.

Simple rabbet joints, reinforced with 4mm brass pins.
The lid panels above the drawers are fixed. Only the center lid opens.
Dimensions: 31cm X 13cm

Woods used: Gonzalo Alves, carcass, lid details, interior components. Koto, lid panels. Ebonized oak, all framing, legs. Gabon ebony, lid-pull, diamond appliques.

Lined with velvet
Finish: many coats of shellac

Thanks for looking, have a great day.

I really, really like this. The visual design is unique but it makes sense, has internal logic (not too many different elements fighting with each other), proportions are just right, very pleasing color combination (black goes with anything, doesn’t it), the brass “rails” that connect the legs are a great idea, and the appliques are an unexpected, beautiful touch. Wonderful composition!

The fact that you have to remove the middle tray to access the sides ones (that’s the way it works, yes?) is definitely unusual, but it’s cool – little hidden areas for the “special” stuff.

For me, this is the best one you’ve done – even if it was a pain in the butt to build.

Great job!

Brian, this is beautiful. The painful build was definately worth the effort – the brass ‘stretchers’ are a really attractive touch

I like that you are using brass more and more.
This is cool and I like the hidden drawers. The “flames” on the lid panels are also appliques?
Cool box Brian, definitely worth the effort! I keep finding that nothing is simple in making something simply beautiful.

Thank you, Steve! Thats a hefty pat on the shoulder coming from you.

Thanks, Swirt.

Thank you, Dick. Really looking forward to getting my paws on that sycamore!

Thanks, Tony!

Thank you, Jon. Yes, flames are appliques too. Whats funny about them is, while I had originally intended to do those to a degree, there had to be more because they are actually covering up spots where the “waterproof” india ink bled onto the Koto, and attempting to sand it out made it worse, couldnt get it out, so I had to hide it.

The hidden drawers are excellent! I could tell where they were (duh!), but I had not expected them to be accessed from the center, bravo!

Nice work with design elements and features as always.

I still expect some of these boxes to come to life and bite me on the ankle 8^)

Thanks, mate!

The hidden drawers were the central design feature of this build, everything else was built around that; except for the design of the legs, that was also central to the planning.

Those hidden drawers are such a great idea. But what I have seen in other projects, you have a very creative mind for boxes. Great work and another creative box!

Wild box Brian.

Tell me why I can’t get the music for “Disco Inferno” out of my head?

Dunno. Perhaps because you lived through that terrible era of american music and enjoyed it???

Great design elements. What size brass pins did you use and where do you buy then.

If my memory serves me well disco was not just an American genre. Did you ever hear of Abba, from Stockholm Swden? (:@)

Remember when you wore your John Travolta costume and Nanced across the dance floor to Dancing Queen?
I’ll bet your still polishing your disco ball.
