Spalted Curly Maple Plank

About 5 or 6 years ago I was given 4 spalted curly maple planks (8 1/2×21) from a luthier whom stated he had no need for them.

I finally got up the courage to cut one up! And here’s the result. Two little boxes!

Having never worked with spalted woods before, I was surprised at how soft and fragile it seemed. So before I started I coated the plank with several liberal coats of tung oil which seems to have help the wood maintain it’s integrity.

Black walnut lids and little brass knobs finished them off. We’ll see how folks like them at the next show before I use up the other planks.

Nice work! I like the look of the spalted maple and you did a great job of wrapping the grain around the box. Thanks for sharing.

Really nice looking wood. I love that grain wrap. Excellent use of this fine wood.

Beautiful!

At first I thought the lead photo was of a chunk of wood with the bandsaw blade marks still visible, lots of fine character there!

That grain wrap is critical with wood like this and you nailed it! (without the use of nails I might add 8^)

Looks great! When I’ve used spalted maple in the past that was getting a little punky, I’ve stabilized with Hot Stuff thin crazy glue.

Holy crap. This is so awesome. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen spalted curly maple before. Those lids and the brass knobs are pure class.
