Project Information

For those fans of K.I.S.S.

About the simplest box one can make. The idea here was to create negative space in which to highlight the stunning tones of this Pao Rosa, a.k.a. brazilian rosewood. I really had to fight the urge to add more detail here.

Dimensions: 7cm X 14cm
Pao Rosa and ebonized oak. I used india ink for the ebonizing.
Finish: many coats of shellac.
Lined with plush velvet.

Have a great day.

Did you stain the top?
What did you use to make the black part?

Thanks, James.

No stains were used; that is the natural colour of this rosewood.

For the ebonizing I used india ink. For this technique, I usually sand to 220g, then steel wool with 0000, then do the color twice, and lock it in with shellac before I do any finish sanding so the colour stays put.

Brian, is that top located with a simple rabbet around the lower edge?

The simple design allows those colors to take center stage. I have some of that pao rosa that is waiting for its moment, perhaps I'll try your idea of black trim 8^)
