Keepsake box

Sapele, poplar, eucalyptus.
Dimensions: 12cm X 12cm X 9.5 cm high.
Lined with grade A goatskin suede
0000 Steelwooled, oiled, waxed.

I deliberated over the course of a few days as to how i was going to design a handle for this box. My wife, who is quite fond of this one, suggested that I keep it minimal and forego the handle altogether. I took her advice.

There is a small router detail on the sliding inner tray you may notice. This was not done intentionally, it is a fine example of a mistake recovery, as I had a bit of tearout on the intitial router pass, so I had to move the fence slightly to get rid of it. And this detail is just a result of that, and I think it looks cool, so I will intentionally do this again on other builds.

Have a zuper day, ya all.

The goof came out looking sorta like a heart. Nice goof. Better fix.

Interesting box. Guessing the Wife is keeping it.

That’s poplar on the sides with all the wild spots? Haven’t seen any that looks like that before.

Nice box, and nice recovery!

Thanks, Dave. And yes it is poplar, and I have a bunch of it just like this now in stock. Small pieces, like 2” X 2” X 6,” but should last awhile. In spanish, we call it Chopo.

That is a beautiful box and Chopo is very striking.
Your wife has a good sense for details.
Great design and well done. So many little features to focus on.
The goatskin really adds another level of craftsmanship!

The floating panel effect is really cool. Kinda (as in really) looks like Mappa burl.

Kudos on the tray fix. I like it that way, looks more refined. Lid gets 5-stars, nice way to tie in the dark corner accent strips1

Thanks, SteveN. I think she would prefer I sell the box, there is alot of wood stuff cluttering up the house, and she is kind of a minimalist, if ya know what I mean.

Thanks, Swirt. I am liking this one too.

Thanks, Jon. I am seriously upping my game now; Ive got sterling silver in stock for inlays, this really fine goatskin suede, and now a bit of thick chocolate-colour Horween leather(chicago), which is the MOST expensive leather in the world. And I am searching for a good glass supplier because I am going to begin using coloured glass inlays as well.

Thanks a bunch, Splinty. I will graciously, humbly accept those stars.

Cool looking box Brian! The panels are a unique touch and that poplar looks like stone. I noticed the detail on the tray and I tried to figure out how you did that. I thought you used a larger forstner bit but the detail was only in the middle so I knew that wasn’t right. Great job and congrats on your DT3

Brian, your boxes are just so creative and this one is no exception! Excellent job and the wood is striking. About the router work, remember, “we all make mistakes, the trick is to fix it in a way that says I meant to do that”. And that you did!

Thanks, Tony.

I would only ever do that here on L.J.s. I certainly would not point out a flaw or mistake to a client/ potential buyer. And it was more of a tip to others that might want to do something similar.
