finally finished these side tables.

thought i’d have issues since i designed them without a face frame around the drawer but nope. these are my most accurate builds to date, everything perfectly square. very happy with the new dewalt 7480 table saw i bought – no more fighting to get a nice, square edge with my old saw.

used leftover pieces of spruce shiplap milled for me by the local lumber company for the top, ripped off the tongues, edge straightened using my router table (1st time for that, too), and everything turned out fine.

bought the slimmest recessed power strip i could find on amazon. looks they’ll work out well. 2 power ports, 2 usb ports – so no more scrounging for electricity behind the couch to power a cell phone, lamp, or tablet. had to sacrifice a bit of drawer depth to accommodate space for the power.

in reading the reviews, i see complaints that the usb ports stop working so only time will tell…

certainly not the prettiest wood but i’m still learning :)

these are my first builds with no screws!

Very nice work.

I like to round the corners and route the edges of table tops but that is just ‘cause I’m a klutz and lurch into any exposed corners. Your top has very clean lines just as it is.

i think this is the first piece that i didnt round over the edges…it’s sandwiched between the sofa and the wall so no worries about hitting that sharp edge.

stared at the top for awhile and i was going to round over but it just looked so nice with a straight edge, thought i’d leave it that way :)

I agree. It’s very crisp and Amish/Shaker about its minimalism yet the drawer, sides and outlets make it neo. I like it. I think the term is “elegant in its simplicity”.

I like the look. Play with sizing a little, and I can see this being helpful next to the grill, out on the patio. WRC or some other outdoorsy wood, and you would be set.

Also fine for indoor use, it’s a nice look. Nice work.

Very nice. I saw the USB ones at Lowes after I bought the standard outlets when I made the nightstand for my daughter last year. Do you have a small hole out the back for the power cord?

dang, i didnt even think about that! i had this vague notion that i’d run the cord down the back leg but now i see i need to rethink…the back is nicely finished, looks the same as the sides. for some reason, guess i was wondering if i would ever put them where the back could be seen…

coowboy, do you have photos of the nightstand with power that you made? did you put the power on the top, under, back, or on the side?

USB ports and power outlets! What a great idea. I love the clean lines.
