Shaker peg rail with threaded pegs

I am kind of fascinated by wooden threads, so recently made a shaker peg rail for my kitchen and threaded the pegs to attach them. I actually found that the threaded post makes these pegs a bit easier to turn – I mounted a piece of wood onto a faceplate, bored and tapped a hole, and then I can thread the peg blank, and screw it into the faceplate before turning it to its final shape!

I hoped to be able to do a stopped threaded hole in the rail, and hide the screws I used to attach it to the wall below the pegs, but sadly the bottoming tap that came with my threading kit still has a bit of a taper on the end, and I just couldn’t make it work in this 7/8” cherry. It could work in a thicker piece maybe, or if I tapered threaded section on the peg somehow… Maybe next time.

Cool idea. Having been a machinist, I can tell you with certainty that tapering the last 1/8 to 3/16 of the thread on your shaker peg will let you screw it to the bottom of your tapped hole. That is assuming that you use a flat-bottom drill.

I’ll have to tinker with it again next time I need to make one of these. I make the threaded portion oversized initially then cut it to length once I had the board made and knew how long it needed to be, so tapering the threads was tricky. I considered just whittling a taper, but didn’t try because I only made one extra peg and didn’t want to have to make any more!

Yep, wooden threads are seductive J’con... neat use of the threads… only unfortunate thing is that only you (and family) know… Strangers have no idea, unless you threaden them with the knowledge.
