A bed for my princess

For my daughter’s second birthday I wanted to build her a princess bed and perhaps at the same time reclaim a portion of our bed at the same time.

I used the wood we had milled from the trees on our property and it was a huge challenge to work with this wood because if had a lot of defects and was prone to twist, bend, curl and samba when cut, milled of even looked at for too long.

I even milled a custom CNC jig to cut the 8 sides tapered legs but this was an epic fail, I had to resort to bandsaw and hand planes to finish and I wished I used klin dried wood at least for these posts.

The head and foot panels curled a lot as well but since they are captured on all sides by the frame that went OK. I made the problem worse by choosing a vertically glued panel (instead of the more traditional horizontal) but the wood pattern is much more appealing to me this way.

I added an insert on both panels with my daughter’s initial. The insert and the pocket were milled on the CNC machine, like the profile to the top and bottom rails.

The finish is de-waxed shellac followed by water based poly.

I am now enlisting grandma to make the curtains, drapery required for a princess

The last picture to show you that she liked her princess bed at first nap…

Thanks for watching

Really fine bed, worthy for your little princess.
Lucky girl, to have you as a father.
Best thoughts,
