My fifth post in a series of nine box art projects using reclaimed redwood. Each posting features a unique box in the main pictures and a narrative focused on a different step in the process. Sometimes including photos from parts of other projects in the series; click on “my next or previous project” to read the whole series.

Redwood, soft maple and elm box #7
  • 6×9 x 4.25 inches
  • Box joints with a skip pattern
  • Four-way book matched burl top
  • Soft maple trim, splayed feet and hinges
  • Sliding, removable tray
  • Brass knob and clocked, sculpted hinge screws
  • Ribbon lock in dark purple

Reclaimed Redwood, a gift from my sister, plus soft maple trim and Carpathian Elm burl purchased from Rare Woods & Veneers – Carlton McLendon, Inc.

Pictures and comments during making of the trim:
Objective: Protective bumpers around the soft redwood box sides. Decorative and complimentary color.

Purchased lumber to match the hinges and cut off enough for trim:

Resawn to make book matched frame trim for top and bottom of boxes:

Marked cut plan on the end of each pair (pencil marks are 1/8 inch kerfs/waste):

Ripped a dado with a flat top blade adjacent to the fence on each, then a rip to cut off the molding pieces and to the router table to 1/8 inch round over the corners that would be exposed (repeated for next strip):

Mitered an end with hand saw and used a shooting board to make it sharp, fitted to boxes a piece at a time, marking and cutting the other end with many returns to the shooting board until I had a tight frame trim.

Glued up the frames and them to the boxes using CA glue (see my blog for more details):

A tray, then signed and tied up with a bow:

Thanks for reading my post. The main pictures in full resolution are also posted at Comments or questions are welcome. I’ll post the next one in a day or so…
