Advent Calendar

My son came home for Thanksgiving with a design idea for an Advent Calendar to give to his fiance. He found a piece of redwood cut in the 1940’s that we would need to re-saw and book match to gain the width we needed for the face. We cut the drawer fronts in the face with a scroll saw and the rest of the box was cut with a bandsaw like a traditional bandsaw box. The redwood faces were then glued onto the resulting drawer bodies. The back is a 15 inch wide piece of Sapele and the ‘sandwich core’ of the box is made from edge glued pine panels. In order to preserve the beauty of the redwood front face we opted to place hanging number tags behind each drawer on the back panel. The tags swing out of the way to reveal a small access hole and we fashioned a wooden ‘key’ cut on the scroll saw to push each drawer out from behind. The base was made from the remaining piece of the original redwood lumber with the front edge intentionally left to show the original saw marks and a beautiful knot. The best part of the project for me was getting to spend about 2 weeks in my workshop with my now adult son.

My kid would love one of these. I have my next project. Where did you get the metal tags. They are the perfect size.
