Hey Lumberjocks,
I just finished a mudroom for my daughter and family- a chance to get coats, jackets, shoes, boots, gloves and mittens a little more organized. I built the lower section out of Pine plywood and trimmed the box ends with Pine and installed a Mahogany top to sit on while the shoes go on. The front edges of the plywood were also trimmed in Mahogany. The lower box was designed around the wicker basket you see in the first cubby in the photo. The wall is attached to the house wall with furring strips that I installed prior. For the wall section I installed an 8 inch piece of Pine plywood before starting the hardwood section. I did not want the two different woods clashing with each other. For the remaining wall section I ended up using some buggy Ash that I purchased off a club member last summer. It was significantly bug damaged and structurally unsound. But artistically it would work out perfect. There were random widths and lengths so I decided to layout the wall as you would a tile floor with joint lines offset and staggered throughout the wall. Prior to installing the wall I tried some different rustic treatments since the Ash already had enough bug holes in the lumber. The best treatment – beyond the nail holes, rough sanding and screw indentations was the resaw effect that I did on several of the boards. I ended up adding a 1/2 inch round-over on all the boards since I knew there was no chance of a line to line fit on that many boards over that height. (And walls that are never flat.) I used dark walnut and cherry stain to vary the colors a bit. The wall is 73 inches wide and 86 inches tall. The seat is 21 inches off the floor. I added a shelf up top to give the project some balance and provides some basket storage as well. All the wood has wipe on Poly U applied to add a little protection. I added 12 mullti-hooks across the top and kid size hooks below.
Thx for checking out the mudroom.
Greg
