Project Information
This Yew Bowl was an awful lot of work to turn. It was hard as a brick and just kept moving while I was turning it even though it was down to 4 or 5% moisture content. I would just get the outside halfway close to round, and while I was on the inside of the bowl the shape would spring out of round. We fought each other several times but sometimes I'm more stubborn than smart and this time was no different. If I was doing this as a living it should have ended up in the fireplace a long time ago! But in the end I was pleased with a somewhat roundish bowl with fantastic grain patterns.
Finish was Watco BB oil, finished with food safe paste wax. I use 1/3 cup beeswax, 1/3 cup Carnauba wax, and 1 cup food grade mineral oil to make the paste.
My turning mentor (I'm still a newbie at this) gave me the chunk of Yew as he needed to clear out his shop a little bit for which I was extremely grateful.
