Project Information

This is a weed vase made from Ambrosia maple. It is 7" in diameter and 1 3/4" wide. I had a dozen designs for the base and settled on this one that looks to be the shadow of the vase projected straight down.
The vase is finished with Danish oil and buffed and waxed.
The base is also Ambrosia Maple and is finished with clear matte spray so it does not shine much.

the following are some process shots of it being made:

I turned off the second tenon with a concave jam chuck

cheers, Jim

Very clever and beautiful vase Jim. It is definitely one of a kind. hats off to you on this. The ambrosia compliments the weed perfectly.
My first impression of the picture made me think you were trying to make a Ka-zoo

Beautiful and unusual.
I love the finished piece and the accompanying stand.
Thanks for showing the process. I couldn't figure it out but what a great vase.
"Weeds" are a great way to showcase it too.

Beautifully done Jim and a wonderful piece of wood too. Your process is coincidentally the same as I have used in the past (great minds, etc.). here is a similar piece but in horizontal position that I made in the same way some time ago.

Thanks Mike, Pottz, Jerry and John.

Hi Mike. I remember my first weed vase was done from the inspiration I got from looking at your very similar design. As far as process goes to clean up both sides, that is the only way I know how to do it. I use jam chucks all the time ( I have a drawer full of them) and this time I got to use the concave one again.

Cheers, Jim
