These are 2 walnut letter openers I made for the craft show tomorrow. A customer ordered one last week and she wanted it to be made of solid wood and have a sharp edge. I made an extra one so she has a choice.
These are 3/4” wide at the handle and 10” long. The cutting edges were hardened with CA glue. They are finished with Danish oil and then buffed and waxed.
Cheers, Jim

I am kind of surprised there are still customers for letter openers. I showed a special teacher how to use a rasp and file so her young student could make one for his parents as a present. They both were pleased with the outcome. Good idea about the CA

Nicely made Jim, letter opener sales are few and far between at the craft market here.

Pretty slick Jim…I still gets ton of junk mail with the occasional actual important letter thrown in so something like this would be nice to have.

Thank you all for the nice comments. I have node a letter opener in 10 years. I sure hope she shows up tomorrow. I did not put my name on them in case she uses it for a weapon!!. She said to be sure it was real sharp!!
Hi John. I used 2 belt sander for almost the work on these.
Hi Brian, you must be near the coast if you don’t have snow yet. In the lower peninsula of Michigan they have over 8” already.
Cheers, Jim

Great idea. I would never have though of making one out of wood. Must try it.
The CA glue was also clever.
I still get snail mail. I don’t trust companies automatically taking $ from my account.

These looks like a really cool project Jim. Nice work. I like the hardened glue idea. Make sure to wipe your finger prints off in case she uses it on her husband.

-- Bob, Western Australia, The Sun came up this morning, what a great start to the day. Now it's up to me to make it even better. I've cut this piece of wood 4 times and it's still too damn short.

WhooHoo, no more paper cuts! 8^)
Great work Jim, very unique “shivs” without a scrap of metal, you’ll make the TSA very nervous!
Is that walnut?
