My first born’s boyfriend collects beer tap handles as a hobby and as souvenirs of his visits to a seemingly infinite number of brewerys. So some years ago he asked if I could make a display shelf that could hold a couple dozen of his collection and have the look of a counter you might find in a bar in Ireland. So after a little research that involved visiting a few Irish pubs, this is the end result.

The construction started with two boards of straight grain mahogany. All joints are pegged and glued or mitered. Overall length is 72”. The holes are bored for 3/8” bolts with counterbores from underneath to hide the bolt heads.

I finished it with one of the combination stain/varnishes on the market. The stuff tended to gel and go on unevenly, leaving a finish that looked old and worn. Just what I was going for! Here it is resting on blocks on the jointer.

And finally mounted on the wall with a few tap handles installed. The buttons on the front face hide the wall anchor bolts. The round knobs are place holders to cover the bolt threads at unused positions.

-- Huh? Whadaya mean it ain't "measure once cut twice"?
