I was going through the July/August Fine Woodworking and saw the article about the making and use of winding sticks. It seemed like a fun shop project and I decided to make something nicer than my typical shop projects. I decided to use walnut to get a bit more experience with the wood and chiseling out areas for inlaying other wood.
Not much more to say. I put a coat of a water-based satin finish but decided to get a bit of oil finish from The Joinery out of Portland, OR. So I sanded off the finish I had applied and tried the BLO finish. I didn’t get all the previous finish out, but it’s a shop project and the idea was to experiment. I still may play around more with the finish.

Nicely done. I made some a couple of years ago and they have become indispensable for flattening stock :-)
