Mahogany Tortilla press

A simple tortilla press made with some scrape mahogany I had laying around as a project for the house. I cut some handholds in the end to make opening the top easier with a template, guide bushing and the core box router bit. We debated about spacing between the plates before finally settling on a quarter distance apart. Will have to see how that goes, I could make it larger if needed by changing the hinges and taking a bit off where the handle meets the top plate but if she wants it narrower I would have to add to the handle or remake it.

Finish is a spray can lacquer. Can’t say I love the way the finish came out but it was very easy to do and clean up which for such a small project is a big plus. This is probably about as large of a job as I would do with a spray can and any larger would require either a spray gun or wipe on/brush finish.

This is one of those “I never knew I needed one until now” projects. I really like this piece…you made a functional item look classy with your work!

Nice work.
Would it be possible to integrate the handle into the top and eliminate the hinges? Just thinking…..

Have your say...
